Reviews

Another recent Cipher release stands as a striking fetish artefact. Clairvoyance (Cipher Productions CS) by Weak Sisters is housed in a hand made cassette case, wrapped in a collage of imagery sourced from Leg Sex magazine. Inside the cassette is tied in stocking fabric, so the listener must tear through it to access the noise within. It appears that the sounds of this experience are also used to open first piece ‘Anthema’, coupled with other sordid close-miked activity and gradually giving way to high frequency squalls. There is an appropriately abject air to much of this material, and initially when voice is utilized it is bored and detached in tone. Mocking laughter, tired groans and a brief tale of a ship’s on board sex doll are all delivered in the same near-monotone in between the wretched waves of treble-heavy din. Side B piece ‘Antemeridian Hours’ offers a more vigorous vocal, though laced with distortion and buried under layers of screaming feedback. Malfunctioning, broken and utterly wretched in character, this is an arresting work indeed.
